Book 2 Post 1
For Book 2 I chose to read Invisible No More: Police Violence Against Black Women and Women of Color. I wanted to read this book because the issue of police violence has been a pressing concern recently. I believe there is blatant injustice in this country when it comes to police violence and people of color. However, the issue of women and police violence has another layer to it that is not often discussed. That is why this book stood out to me. Police violence on its own is not discussed as openly and honestly as it should be. Despite the fact that there are clear and systematic issues with the police system and people of color, excuses are still made and the issues are not discussed in a candid manner. We continuously let these injustices go and watch as people die due to the injustice of police brutality. This book explores those issues and demands that people pay attention to and talk about what is happening around us.
I have not gotten very far in the book so far, but I like the fact that Andrea Ritchie demands to be heard. She demands that people pay attention to women of color and the injustices that they face. The beginning of the book focuses on the case of Sandra Bland, a black woman who was found dead in her jail cell after being arrested for a traffic violation. Ritchie argues that this case demonstrates the larger issues at hand with police brutality. She also talks about the historical roots of police violence against women of color in slavery. She encourages her readers to see that this issue is in no way new. There have been systematic injustices for women of color going back hundreds of years. I think this is important because we need to stop pretending like this is a new issue. We need to focus on the bigger issues at hand and recognize the struggles that women of color have faced for hundreds of years.
I am looking forward to finishing the book and seeing how Ritchie tackles this difficult issue.
